Look Up ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Look Up mobile application and the website at lookup-app.io. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our services.

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a display username.

Location Data

With your permission, we collect precise location data when you submit a sighting report. Location is used to place sightings on the map and to send nearby-sighting alerts. You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings.

Photos and Video

If you attach media to a sighting report, those files are uploaded and stored in our secure cloud storage. Media may be reviewed for content moderation purposes.

Device and Sensor Data

Sighting reports may include device sensor readings (compass heading, altitude, barometric pressure) to aid in analysis. We also collect your device platform (iOS or Android) and app version for diagnostics.

Analytics Events

We collect anonymized usage analytics (screens viewed, features used, session duration) to improve the app experience. Analytics are linked to your account but are never shared with third parties for advertising purposes.

Push Notification Tokens

If you enable push notifications, we store your device's push token to deliver sighting alerts and community notifications.

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Look Up:

  • Supabase — Database hosting, user authentication, and file storage
  • Mapbox — Map rendering and geocoding
  • Expo — App updates delivery and push notification routing
  • SightEngine — Automated image moderation
  • OpenWeatherMap — Weather data for sighting context
  • Apple App Store / Google Play — Subscription payment processing

Each service processes data according to their own privacy policies. We do not sell your personal data to any third party.

5. Data Retention

Account data (profile, preferences, community content) is retained while your account is active. If you delete your account, personal data is removed within 30 days. Sighting reports you submitted are retained in anonymized form (with your user ID removed) to preserve the integrity of the shared sighting database.

6. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission (TLS), secure authentication tokens, and row-level security policies on our database. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

Look Up is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, we will delete that information promptly.

8. Your Rights (GDPR / CCPA)

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectification — Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Deletion — Request deletion of your personal data (available in-app via "Delete Account")
  • Export — Request a portable copy of your data
  • Opt-out — Disable analytics collection or push notifications in app settings
